Ingredient Clinical Studies

Many studies are available on the use and benefits of probiotics. Here are references and resources to studies performed on some of the ingredients found in NuBiotix.

1: Probiotics may 'counter obesity and diabetes': NIH study

By Stephen Daniells+, 10-Jul-2013

A daily dose of probiotics may prevent weight gain and insulin resistance in mice, says a new study from scientists at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) with implications for obesity and diabetes.

2: Probiotics May Protect Against Drug-Resistant Super-bug, Study Finds

Bastyr researchers find strong benefit to probiotics, leading hospitals to rethink policy.

Probiotic supplements may greatly lower the threat of an antibiotic-resistant "super-bug" that has alarmed hospital leaders, according to Bastyr University research.

Researchers found that patients taking probiotics, or live bacteria, were 64 percent less likely to experience the effects of Clostridium difficile, an infectious bacterium that can cause severe diarrhea and life-threatening inflammation of the colon.

The analysis was published by the Cochrane Collaboration, a database highly regarded for its comprehensiveness. The low-cost, low-risk nature of probiotics, coupled with the unusually strong findings, could create an immediate impact on medical practice. The study (and an earlier version) has already received attention from the BBC, The New York Times, Nature.com and major aggregators of research news.

That's an encouraging sign for researchers led by Joshua Goldenberg, ND ('13), who graduated in June from Bastyr's Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine program.

"Naturopathic doctors have been prescribing probiotics for patients using antibiotics for a long time," says Dr. Goldenberg. "Now we have rigorous evidence behind it. We cut the risk down by two-thirds. There are very few medical interventions, conventional or naturopathic, that improve results by that much."

3: A new study provides the first evidence in humans that probiotics in the diet can modulate brain activity.

In a proof-of-concept study using functional MRI (fMRI), researchers found that women who regularly consumed probiotic-containing yogurt showed altered activity of brain regions that control central processing of emotion and sensation. The study was funded by Danone Research.

"This study is unique because it is the first to show an interaction between a probiotic and the brain in humans," lead author Kirsten Tillisch, MD, associate professor, Oppenheimer Family Center for Neurobiology of Stress, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles, told Medscape Medical News.

"We can't say whether the effects are beneficial; that will take larger studies with more complex designs. One of the areas this will move to is study of disease groups like irritable bowel syndrome and anxiety," she added.

The results appear in the June issue of Gastroenterology.
